Hi 7-2! - March 31

Hello to my amazing homeroom! I hope you and your family are all well.

I wish we could all be back at the school together learning and being active; however, it is so important that we are all at home staying safe. All of the teachers at David Thompson miss everyone of you!!

I have a few updates for you:

-It will be very important from now on, to always check the blog and D2L. Teachers will be posting important times and updates on the blog and class content on D2L.

-I have spoken to some of you about login issues. If you need your password reset you can contact Ms Felix in the office. If there are any other type of login problems, please contact me and we will fix it asap, as this is super important as online classes start on Monday. Email me at:  eahidalgo@cbe.ab.ca

Many of you have seen the Homeroom Survey and have responded. Thank you! The link was sent to parents via email. Below is a link to the survey for anyone who may not have received it. If it could be completed tomorrow, that would be great!

Science:
Je suis encore en apprentissage... Comment faire du tutorat en vidéo chat!!! Google Meet, etc.

April 1 2020:
Hello students, I hope you are doing well and not climbing the walls out of sheer boredom yet. 😄
As you have most likely heard teachers are asking students to please check the blog on a consistent basis as well as D2L. Class instruction/notes and homework assignments will be posted on D2L on a weekly basis starting next week. If you have trouble signing in to D2L please check with your homeroom teacher for help.

In regards to the math program and learning from home. This will be challenging for me as for all of us as we familiarize ourselves with the technology needed to stay in touch with you. I have been working on setting up the D2L shell and collecting resources that can complement the rest of our school year course content.  Prior to the break in Math we were at the end of chapter 6 and starting a review of the chapters concepts. Chapter 6 "Equations". On my last blog post prior to spring break I had ask that you complete the chapter review pages 248 - 250 and that you give a try at doing the practice test in your textbook on page 251.  I hope you taken the time to do so.Prior to moving on to the next chapter/unit I am planing on posting an assignment to test your knowledge of chapter 6. This will be posted at the start of next week in D2L under announcement and content. In the meantime, so that you do not start missing math too much, please try to do the math problems # 17 - 20 page #255, they pertain to chap 6. You can also look at material that I will be posting on the D2L site, math review material etc... Ok. Take care of yourselves, and be kind to your parents and family.
Mr. Soufi.

 FLA:

Hello!  I hope you are all staying safe and healthy, and finding ways to keep yourselves busy.  You are missed and we are here to support your learning from afar in any way we can.  Feel free to contact us by email if you need to!  While we wait for more details and a more concrete plan to be established, here are a few things that you can focus on in the meantime.

1. Find ways to listen to, and read, in French!  I know you submitted your silent reading books so here are some online resources that offer videos, apps, games, news articles and more!
https://ici.radio-canada.ca/jeunesse/scolaire

2.  Respond to what you heard or read.  Either in writing, or verbally to a parent/sibling/friend (even if it's in English!  French is better obviously, but we will take what we can get right now!) Here are some questions to consider:  Personal response questions

ELA:

Hello, 7-2! We barely got started on our poetry unit. Sad story. Feel free to keep your novel study books. Once we know what will happen, I'll give further instructions on what to do with them!

Here are some activities to keep your ELA skills honed in the meantime:

TeenBookCloud: An online collection of eBooks, novels, graphic novels, video, and audiobooks through the Calgary Public Library (click on “Access TeenBookCloud" bottom of page)
Calgary Public Library Resources: e-books, Bookflix, music, movies, online tutoring, encyclopedias, etc. Your library card number is your email without the @educbe.ca - your PIN number is 1234567
CommonLit: Fiction and non-fiction texts for students in Grades 3-12
What's Going on in this Picture? Images from The New York Times stripped of their captions – and an invitation for students to discuss and write about.

Math
Hello students. I hope you are keeping safe and healthy.

As far as math work you can do at home. You can complete the last part of chapter six the review pages 248 -250. If you have completed that part already, you can try doing the practice test on page 251. Then check your answers at the back of the textbook.

More information should come your way after spring break. Have a nice break and explore new and different ways to spend your time. Take Care!!  😎 Mr. Soufi.

Science:

You now have also access to a Science D2L shell. Explore the different sections although it is a little sparse for now... If you decide to work on study sheet, use Google docs and share your work with me. Please, do not spend time  cutting /pasting pictures from the web! I will live without images... I will add comments to it and add marks in PowerSchool. Stay safe and away... Cheers

March 13th

Science:
We are finished our heat and temperature unit. Now is the time to review and prepare Wednesday's unit exam.
If all goes as planned insulated bottles will be tested on Thursday March 19th.
Notes module 3
Notes module 4 Structures et forces
As per usual, Power School is consistently updated with new marks.

Math:
This week in math the students wrote a quiz on the 5 different methods we learned to solve a linear equation. We reviewed the quiz and the results will be posted shortly on Power School. The class also continued with Chapter 6 and practice how to solve equations using algebra ( "operation inverse" in french). Students did some practice questions with equations and with word problems. The class also did some work from the text book. Student had pages 238 and 239 # 1 - 7 and 8 - 9 as well as page 243 # 1 -5. There will be a unit test next week, Wednesday or Thursday ( March 18 or 19th )depending on the progress of our general review early next week. Students have been advised to bring home their note books and textbooks and and review the concepts we have seen this weekend in preparation for the unit test on Chapter 6.

ELA:
This week in ELA, we began our poetry unit through a poetic devices jigsaw, where students became experts on certain devices. They will be teaching their groups about those devices Monday and will be writing a quick quiz about them on Tuesday. After that, we will begin various poetry stations to apply their new knowledge through various activities. This will last several weeks.

Social Studies:
In social studies, we continued to work on our Confederation timelines. They were due on Wednesday. We then began preparing for the unit exam that will be on Wednesday next week (for which we will study). We will then be learning about the settlement of Western Canada.

FLA:
On Monday, March 16, there will be a quiz on the passé composé.  Students have engaged in many practice activities and written a practice test.  They can use these to study and prepare, as well as their purple notes booklet.  Following this, we will begin a review of the other past tense conjugation:  The imparfait tense.

March 6

Sciences:
This week we studied convection, conduction, emission, and ways to make heat and electricity.
Study Sheet for theme 7 is due Monday.

Math:
This week in math the class continued with unit 6 Equations. We moved from using models to solve equations to solving equations involving integers. The class has also begun 6.4 of the chapter: solving equations using Algebra. Student are again, reminded that in preparation for the quiz that will take place this coming Monday (March 9th)  should do examples of question from each of section 6.1 6.2 and 6.3. We did a review in class and students were expected to copy the notes in their notebook. They can refer to the notes and examples in them to prepare for the quiz as well. Review and know how to represent the 5 methods we have learned to solve an equation. Next week we will continue with chapter 6 solving equation with algebra and the last part of the unit using different methods to Solve Equations. Homework that should have been completed this week was page 234 # 1- 7 page 236 # 1 - 4 and page 238-239 # 1 -7.

ELA:
This week, we watched The Neverending Story, reviewed plot diagrams and learned about the hero's journey plot structure. We then began putting ourselves into the story by creating our own magic amulet or recreating ourselves as characters in the movie. We will finish up with that project next week (it will be due Tuesday or Wednesday, depending on need). Then, we will begin our poetry unit. We will learn about group responsibilities and do a jigsaw exploration of poetic devices.

Social Studies:
This week we worked on our Confederation timelines. We will continue to do so early next week - it's due Wednesday. Once finished, we will prepare for our unit test on Tuesday the following week. The unit test will include the war of 1812, the Upper Canada/Lower Canada rebellions, the Great Migration, the Underground Railroad, and Confederation.

FLA:
In FLA this week we have revised the passé composé verb tense.  First looking at how to conjugate a verb with avoir and then looking at the circumstances under which we conjugate our verb with être.  We also learned some irregular past participles.  Next week, we will continue to practice what we have learned so far with the passé composé and we will engage in an activity where we have to identify the use of the passé composé tense within a short story.
