Week of Dec 16th.

Sciences:

FLA:
This week we will have a chance to practice our skits on Monday and then we will be presenting them in class for the remainder of the week!  Come prepared on Tuesday with any props or costumes that you may need.  There will be no homework over the break, have a happy holiday!

Math: 
This week in math we practiced subtracting with mixed numbers and did a  review of the unit in preparation for the unit test. Class and homework were page 207 # 1 - 6page 208 # 7 -12. Student have for homework due Monday the chapter review page 213 # 1 - 9, which will be helpful for the unit test. The unit test on fractions will be on Tuesday Dec 17. Please review your class notes and look over all four concepts that we reviewed in class. Your text 

book  is a good source to do or redo practice examples of additions and subtractions of fractions.

Week of Dec 9th

Science:
Test on themes 1, 2 and 3 on Thursday!
Study sheet for theme 3 due Thursday Dec 12th.

ELA:
In ELA this week we finished our creation myth recitations, and therefore our Myths and Legends unit. We also began talking about informational texts.  Next week, we will be learning annotation strategies for reading such texts.

Social Studies:
In Social Studies, we have began a research project based on various topics in Canadian history. Next week, students will turn their research into a PowerPoint/Google Slides presentation.

FLA:
On Monday, December 9th, we will have a quiz on possessive pronouns!  Review your notes (pink sheet) and the exercises we complete in class to prepare for this quiz.  For the remainder of the week, you will use what you learned about possessive pronouns to create and present a skit to the class!

Math:
 In math this week, the class explored how to subtract  fractions using models. Using picture models such as rectangles, fraction circles and other geometric shapes to represent fractions. We also studied subtracting fractions with symbols. In the later part of the week the class worked on using symbols to subtract fractions and adding with mixed numbers. The work we did in class and as home work was page 193 # 1- 7 and #8 -12. As well as page 197 # 1-9 and page 202 # 1- 8. 
Next week we will look at subtracting with mixed numbers and a total review of the unit in preparation for the unit test. Have a great weekend! 😊

Week of Dec. 2nd

Sciences:
We will view varied ways for plants to reproduce including flowers and their parts.
Study sheet for theme 2 is due Thursday Dec. 5th.
Students should spend some time regularly working on their Méga-Résumé.

ELA:
This prepared our creation stories to be orally recounted. Some told their stories starting Thursday. The rest will be performing Monday through Wednesday next week. Afterwards, we will be beginning our next unit by learning reading strategies for non-fiction/informational texts.

Social Studies:
This week, we continued learning about the French settlement in Canada. We began our red paperclip project. Next week, we will begin research for a digital slideshow presentation about the English settlement in Canada.

Math
This week in Math we continued with adding fractions using a common denominator as well as doing a review of the first part of the unit. Students wrote a mid unit quiz on Thursday involving the addition of fractions using a visual representations/pictures and using common denominators. The work done in class and at home was page 188 # 1- 7 and page 190 # 1- 8. 
Next week the math class will look at using models and symbols. We may get to the part of adding fractions with mixed numbers. 

FLA: 

This week we will be finishing up our work with last week's reading comprehension activities.  We will then start taking a look at possessive pronouns, and engaging in some comprehension activities and exercises to reinforce our understanding.

Week of Nov. 25th

Science:
Study sheet for theme 1 is due Monday.
We will study different structures and adaptation of plants.

FLA:
This week you will have some organizational time to revisit some of your past and make changes/improvements or get caught up on missed assignments.  Later in the week we will engage in some more listening comprehension activities.

Math:
This week in math we looked at the first part of chapter 5, operations with fractions. This first involved activating prior knowledge including; equivalent fractions, relating mixed numbers and improper fractions. The class also worked on using models/drawings of geometric shapes to add fractions. The work we did in the textbook was pages 179-180 # 1 - 7 and pages 183-184 # 1 - 7. We also studied how to add fractions using symbols, ( using common denominators and different denominators) Next week we will continue with operations with fractions and look at subtracting fractions.
**Reminder, students if you are absent during the week, it is your responsibility to make up the work you missed in class and to inquire with your teacher on what you have missed as well as do the homework posted on the blog.

Week of Nov. 18th

ELA:
This week we did typing and final edits to our Creation Myths. They are due Monday (though they can be printed during class if necessary). Next week, we will have our unit test for our Myths and Legends Unit, with Monday as a day to study. After that, we will begin to prepare our performances for our myths. Études Sociales:
This week we viewed and discussed some Canada Heritage Minutes related to important events in Canadian History. Students also wrote journal entries from the point of view of either one of Jacques Cartier's men or one of Donnacona's to explore how a historical conflict can have different perspectives. Next week we will be continuing on our Journey through History with Samuel de Champlain.

Math:
This week in math we continued to to do work on relating fractions, decimals and percents. We also focused on the last part of the unit involving solving percent problems. The class did a complete review of the unit. On Thursday we wrote our fractions,decimal and percent unit test. The work we did in the textbook was Pages 115-116 # 1 - 8, Pages 121 1 - 6 and the unit review handout. Next week we will start a new unit, chapter 5 which is "Operations with Fractions".  Have a great weekend. 😊


Sciences:
All but one "Creature" presentation are done. We are now starting our 2nd unit on plants. Study sheet for theme 1 unit 2 is due Nov. 20th.

FLA:
This week we will finish our festival projects. They are taking longer than anticipated but they have been worth it as they have been very engaging and interesting so far!  On Tuesday afternoon we will be fortunate enough to watch a French rap performance from a Quebec rap and slam artist from Quebec.  On Monday I will give you a little preview of who he is and introduce you to some of his work in anticipation of his performance.

Week of November 12

FLA:
This week we will be finishing up our book talks and French festival research projects.  Presentations begin on Thursday so be ready to share your project with the class!Math: 

Math: 
This week in Math (Nov 4-8 ) we explored how to do order of operations with decimals. The class looked at how to relate fraction, decimals and percents. WE examines and practiced how to solve percent problems. Class work and homework we did in the text book...page 110  # 1 - 6 and 7 - 11. Pages 112-113 # 1 - 4. On Thursday (focus day) students were suppose to work on pages 115-116 # 1 -8 and it was assigned as homework if not completed in class. 

Next week we will have the unit test for Fractions, Decimals and Percents on Wednesday Nov 13, students have been advised. Students are expected to study over the long weekend and to do a general review of all the concepts visited in this unit. Students can do page 121 # 1 - 9 as a tool to review We will continue our review on Monday and Tuesday next week.

Week of Nov. 4th

Science:
Project presentation are Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Unit exam is Tuesday Nov 12th. Study sheets for themes 6 and 7 are due Monday Nov. 4th.
Focus day: Students should consult their marks in Power School and work on any missed study sheets. It also is possible to work ahead and built study sheet for the new unit. Student should also review and prepare for their unit exam (Pushed back to Tuesday!)

FLA:
This week we start book talks!  Don't forget to finish reading your independent novels and refer to the questions given to you last week in order to prepare yourself for this discussion.  While I am taking each of you aside one by one for your book talks, you will be working on the French festival research project that was introduced to you!
Focus Day:
-Complete any out-standing work.
-Read your novel or prepare the answers to your book talk questions if you haven't presented already.  (Anyone with today as their presentation date will be discussing their book with me) 

-Work on your French festival project.  You will also have Tuesday and Wednesday of next week to work on this.  You will present to the class on Thursday!

Math:
For focus day. Complete any outstanding home work on unit 3 Fractions. Complete work from Wednesday page 110 # 7 - 11. Continue homework assigned on Thursday (Nov 7) page 112-113 # 1 -4. Complete Friday's math work, read page 114-115 and work on # 1 -8 from pages 115 - 116.

If all this is complete, do the unit review on page 120- 122 of your text book in preparation for the unit test next week which will take place on Wednesday Nov 13. Students are expected to study all the concepts from our fractions,decimal and percent unit.   

This week in Math we explored how to divided decimals using base ten blocks. We learned how to visually represent a division with decimals using base ten blocks. The class also practiced their long division and how to apply it to decimals. Work we did in the text book...page 106 # 1-8. page 107 # 9-13. We also started to look at the order of operations with decimals Pages 108 and 109. 

**A friendly reminder of classroom expectation: students that are absent for any reason are responsible and expected to verify with the teacher on work and class instructions they may have missed and to catch up on all the work and assessments ( quiz / test) they missed.

Week of October 28th

Sciences:

FLA:  This week we will continue working on some reading and listening comprehension assignments.  Halloween activities and dance are on Thursday!  If you attended a tutorial last week you are able to write a retest for the present tense quiz on Monday at lunch!

ELA (McMorran):
Last week, we finished up our creation poems, and we read a few more and planned and performed some tableaux for them. Next week, we will be beginning our final project for our Myths and Legends unit, which is students creating their own animal 'creation' story. They will then take this story and prepare an oral retelling of it. 

Social Studies (McMorran):
Last week, we did some front loading (super exciting notes and vocabulary sheets) for new unit: Imperialism. Additionally, students were given back their marked unit exams from the last unit and need to have them signed by Monday. This week, we will be doing a research project to create a trading card for a famous modern or historical explorer.

 Math: In Math this week we continued with our unit in fractions and decimals. Students explored how to multiply decimals and how to represent multiplications using base ten blocks and drawings. We also had a quiz on the first part of the unit which included fractions and decimals, ordering and comparing fractions and decimals and adding and subtracting them. Next we will work on dividing decimals and order of operations with decimals.

Week of Oct. 21st

SCIENCE
Test themes 4 and 5 Tuesday Oct. 22nd.
Study sheet for theme 5 is due Thursday Oct. 24th.
Students are asked to make (or buy) a small amount of  play dough. As a group of 3 or 4 students. 2 or 3 colors. All sealed in an air tight bag or in a small container.

Math
 This week we reviewed how to order fractions and decimals. We also explored in class adding and subtracting decimals. Students did work from their math text books. (P.94 - 99). Next week we will be continue with our unit and look at multiplying and dividing decimals.

FLA:
If you are not happy with the mark you earned on the present tense test you must first attend a tutorial before you will be allowed to take a retest.  Tutorials will run this Monday and Wednesday and the retest will take place on Monday, October 28th during lunch.  

This week we will be engaging in some reading and listening comprehension activities!  Don't forget to keep reading your independent novels at home.  We will begin book talks the first week of November!

SOCIAL STUDIES (McMorran):
This week, students watched part 1 of the CBC documentary series: Canada: the Story of Us. They then learned about the various political parties in our riding in order to make a more informed decision in the student vote that took place on the 18th. Next week, we will begin our new unit on European Imperialism in North America. We will be starting with a vocabulary list Monday, then do some fill in the blank sheets about Imperialism. We will likely also start our next project, which is a trading card for a famous explorer (both historical and modern).

ELA (McMorran):
This week we practiced using figurative language by writing poems inspired by indigenous creation poetry. We will finish next week with our visual representations to accompany the poems. Next week, we will be doing a listening activity and we will be reading and creating tableaux scenes for some additional creation myths.

Week of Oct. 15th

Science:

ELA:
We finished editing and writing our final copies of our Maui comparative paragraphs. Thursday, we looked at figurative language (Metaphor, Simile, Personification and Imagery) and explored some Indigenous creation poetry. Next week, we will be creating our own in a similar style and visually representing our work.

FLA:
Your monster projects are due on Tuesday, October 15th!  Please ensure that you have labeled your monster with at least 10 adjectives to describe their appearance.  Then make sure you have a list of 10 sentences written in the present tense to describe their tastes and interests!  Next week we will continue our work with the present tense as well as engage in some reading and listening comprehension activities.  We will have a quiz on the present tense on Thursday, October 17th!

Math: 
This week we started the unit on fractions, decimals and percents. We did a brief review of fraction understanding form the previous year. We also look at how to change fractions into decimals. The students explored and practiced how to identify a decimal that is repeating or terminating. We had homework each night this week that assisted the class in understanding on how to change a fraction into a decimal and a decimal into a fraction. Students also explored how to do this without the use of a calculator.( Pages 88-89 # 1 - 5 ) on Monday (Page 89 # 6 -10) on Tuesday and ( page 90 #11-12) on Wednesday. As a class we also learned how to compare and order fractions and decimals. Homework due next Tuesday Oct 15  Page 94 # 1 - # 6.

Week of Oct. 7th

Science:
Test on Monday, themes 1, 2 and 3
Creature project!


Math:
This week we continued ways to subtract integers. The class worked on examples with a numbers line and how to solve subtractions of integers (positive, negative) by changing the subtraction to an addition.  The class also did a complete unit review in preparation for our unit text. Students wrote their unit test on Thursday. Next week students will be starting the math unit on fractions, decimals and percentages. note: ( Students are assigned homework almost daily and the pages and example numbers are written on the board, students are asked to write their daily homework assignments reminders in their homework notebook.) Please read pages 84 to 88 in your text book in preparation for next week. Have a nice weekend.

We are learning about and writing comparative paragraphs for the legend of Maui and Disney's Moana. We will finish next week.

Social Studies:
This week we did presentation for our first peoples research projects. Next week, we will do some review for our first unit test on Wednesday. Included on this test will be map reading, timelines, 3QPOC, active citizenship, as well as information learned in student presentations this week.  After that, we will begin to lay some groundwork to begin our Imperialism unit.

FLA:
We have been reviewing how to conjugate verbs in the present tense, and identifying present tense verbs in the context of a story.  This week, we will practice using the present tense to develop a paragraph.  We will also begin a creative descriptive project in order to combine what we learned about adjectives and present tense verbs.

Math:
This week in Math class we continued our work on integers. The class explored ways of subtracting
integers using tiles to visually represent our understanding. We completed many work examples in the text book. Next week we will continue our work with subtracting integers with a number line as well as a review of the entire unit. The unit test on integers will possibility be on Thursday Oct 3rd. I will confirm this with the students on Monday. Enjoy the possibility of snow this weekend ❄⛄ 

Social Studies:
We worked this week on researching and creating posters for our presentations on the first peoples of Canada. Presentations will be due Tuesday, Oct. 1, so that students can practice and present their information. 

ELA:
We read the Maori legend of Maui. We are now watching Moana to compare and contrast the two. In order to do so, we will be learning paragraph structure and writing a paragraph comparing one element of the myth.

Looking back and looking ahead Sept 23-27

Math
This week in math we continued to learn about integers. We practiced the adding of integers with tiles and we also learned how to add integers using a numbers line. On Wednesday student had a quiz on the 1st half of the integer unit.  Next week we will be continue our unit and learns about subtracting integers with tiles and a numbers lines. Pages 66-75 of the text book. Enjoy your long weekend!

ELA:

This week we compared the myths of "Narcissus and Echo"(Roman) and "Dragon Princess Tatsuko." (Japanese) We then began reading the written version of the Maui Myth, which we will compare to the Disney film Moana. We will practice paragraph writing and discuss how audience can affect the interpretation of a work.

Social Studies

Our 3QPOC sheets were due on Monday. We then moved onto map reading and wrote a quiz on that on Wednesday. We then viewed and reproduced maps of north america in 2 different ways: we viewed the ancestral linguistic divisions of where our indigenous peoples lived, and then considered the map as a giant turtle, as it is in one of the creation stories we read. Finally, we began a research and presentation project into individual First Nations of Canada. We will work on it all next week and presentation will follow the week after.

FLA:
Thank you for sharing so many fun and interesting things about yourselves last week during your "ma vie en sac" presentations!  It was a great way to get to know a little bit more about each of you and it was a nice way to end off a short week 😀  This week we will be continuing our review of adjectives, preparing for a quiz and possibly introduce our next project.  On Tuesday we will be going to the library where Ms. Fitz will tell us a bit about the rules and systems of the learning commons.  We will also have a chance to sign out an independent reading novel or non-fiction book.  You will be expected to read this on your own time at home.  In a month or two, you will have independent conversations with me about your novel so that you can tell me about what you have been reading!

On Wednesday there will be a quiz on adjective placement and accord.

Looking back & Looking ahead September 16-20





Math

In Math this week, we reviewed the results of the diagnostic test the students wrote last week. We started our unit on Integers (Unit 2). The students learned to use models to add integers and did many practice examples. Students did homework assignments based on the first two sections of this unit. Next week we will look at subtracting Integers. If you have not already done so, a reminder to please have your textbook covered by Monday Sept. 16 at the latest.

In Science this week we are starting our Interaction and Ecological System unit. We will learn how to make a Study Sheet and will view the theme 1 of the 1st unit of our textbook.

ELA:


Due in ELA this week were our Soundtrack projects. Once we were finished with those, we talked about classifications of Myths, Legends, Fantasy and Fairy/Folk Tales. We read our first story: "How the Thunder made Horses" and will be comparing it to "The Contest Over Athens." Following that, we will de the same with "Narcissus and Echo" and "Dragon Princess Tatsuko." Then we will do a larger comparison with a written version of the Maui Myth and the Disney film Moana.



Social Studies

This week in Social Studies we worked on some basic skills like creating timelines and finding reliable sources for current events and how to take research notes. We had timelines due this week and our 3QPOC sheets are due on Monday. We will be moving on to map reading and will be writing a quiz on that on Wednesday. We will bridge to our first official unit by talking about how our Indigenous People viewed the geography of their home.



FLA:
This week we learned about placing and according adjectives in French.  We are in the middle of a fingerprint project that students will complete on Monday and it will be due on Tuesday.  We will then prepare a small presentation in order to get to know each other a little better, and also to give me a sense of where we are starting out with regard to our verbal skills in French.  It's called <Ma vie en sac> or "my life in a bag".  In this spin on show-and-tell, we will select 3 objects that are able to fit into a bag.  These must be objects we feel best represent our values and who we are.  We will then describe each object aloud to the class and explain the importance of each!

Science:
We have finished our Lab Safety and Lab Equipment overview. Students now have their own Science Textbook which should be covered when convenient. We will shortly start our first unit on Interactions and Ecosystems which means that on average, a weekly Study Sheet will have to be built be students. More info on Monday. Class Notes Écosystème. ELA





In hopes of saving some trees, I have forgone printing the ELA 7 course outline this year, in favour of linking to it here. Please check it out and discuss it with your student. Students have begun their first project of creating a soundtrack to their lives to help them to think a little bit more about their identites and to hopefully help me get to know them a little bit better. Linked are the assignment page and rubric. It will be Tuesday next week (tentatively). Afterwards next week, we will be beginning our Myths and Legends unit. The first two myths that we will be reading and comparing How the Thunder Made Horses and The Contest over Athens. I’m looking forward to this year in ELA!

Next week, we will be starting to do some basic social studies skills - timelines, map reading, and research techniques in anticipation of starting our first unit in a couple weeks - Canada’s First Peoples.

Welcome back! This week we have been engaging in some activities to get to know each other and to become familiar with the course outline and classroom organization. Please read and sign the course outline that was sent home. You can view and print a copy for yourself using the following link: Grade 7 FLA course outline Next week we will begin reviewing adjectives and how they accord with the noun in French. Students will then use their knowledge of adjectives to describe themselves through a 'fingerprint' project.





Phys. Ed





This week in Phys. Ed we introduced the students to all the PE Teachers and talked about the expectations of PE. We explained how the students will be assessed throughout the term as well. All the students should have received a PE Locker in the Change Room. They should be bringing their Gym Strip home on Fridays to get it washed for the upcoming week. We started our Soccer Module this week and will continue into next week as well! Have a great weekend!
